There are numerous definitions of geography and many misconceptions. Geography is not just the memorization of place names and it is not just map making though both of these activities are certainly important. Geography is concerned with where and why things are located as they are. It is concerned with the patterns of phenomena and the processes that created them. Therefore, there is no specific subject matter which it studies, but rather its subject is the Earth, described and explained using a spatial perspective.
To understand our relationship with the Earth, geographers ask questions and search for answers to problems. By exploring these problems, we can make better, wiser decisions. To help organize our investigations of questions, geographers use five major concepts or themes:
1) Place
2) Locations
3) Region
4) Movement
5) Human/Environment Interaction
